Tucson Shopping Trip

We took a shopping trip to Tucson this past weekend. The shopping had nothing to do with Christmas or Black Friday. We just needed to reach civilization and shop at something other than Walmart. With a family of eight it is more economical to shop at Sams or Cosco so that was our main reason for our trip. We also met an old friend on Facebook who lives in Tucson and decided that while we were there we would visit her church.

After Church on Sunday we decided it would be fun to have a picnic in the mountains. In fact Ace and I were on memory lane from our Honeymoon. (for those who didn't know us then we took a one month honeymoon and drove across 18 states and 1 Country, (Mexico) living out of the back of Ace's Ford pick up truck.) We made lots of memories, and one was driving up Mt. Lemmon on nice paved roads then taking a two track down the back side of the mountain. Back then I was sure I was going to be a dead bride on her honeymoon. Would I do it again Hmmmm It was beautiful, I'll have to think about it. Well here we are 13 years later thinking the kids would like to see a little of our honeymoon and having lunch while we do it sounded fun too.

The excitement started when the pavement up the mountain changed to dirt. Ace stopped our 15 passenger van to take a few scenic pictures. As he took the pictures, four pick up trucks with large wheels passed us. I felt something was wrong the unspoken red flags that Ace and I were thinking in our heads are as follows.
1.) We didn't remember it being a dirt road.
2.) I see no place to have a picnic not even a parking place to sit and eat in the van.
3.) I was wondering can our large van make it?
4.) We were passing a lot of Quads, Jeeps, Motorcycles, & Go Carts.
5.) We hit a large rut in the road and the rear end of the van went flying into the air, sure reminded me of a donkey kicking its hind legs when forced to do something it doesn't want to do.

After 7 Miles and 20 minutes Ace says I think we missed our turn. Gustie says "Mom I have a headache." Piper chimes in "so do I". I say "I know because my head hurts too". I worry that Cherokee might have brain damage. I think we broke a strut! Does anyone know what a strut is? Our vinegar that we bought from Cosco the day before sprung a leak.

The picture is NOT Mt. Lemmon!!! But, you can follow the winding dirt trail down the mountain and see how far we went.

Some how the black and white button on the camera got pushed. I think it was from all that bumping around.

I know I put my head between my legs a couple of times. I was so sick to my stomach. I just need a little bit more space between me and the edge of the mountain. Do I want to do this again. NEVER!!!! Remind me to wait at the bottom of the mountain when Ace does something like this again.
Ahhhh! Mt. Lemmon. Nice paved road with guard rails, and picnic tables and look out points. I can handle this.
The windy trail up to 8,000 ft. It was beautiful and even got to enjoy some snow.

I am long past the enjoyment of snow for winter. I am looking forward to the enjoyment of green grass again! (smile)

I think I am sick just reading this. Weird - cuz just before I read this, the kids were asking since gas is "cheap" if we could go to PA to see Norm's brother & SIL & cousins. We both said NOT in the wintertime, driving thru the mountains! You affirmed it, reading this!

Oh, tut tut! I was just looking at it and reminiscing about my own trip through the mountains in Montana with my parents and grandparents (before I was married). I loved it! I would do it again in a heartbeat! It wasn't winter, though. Beartooth pass is closed in September. Only thing I didn't like was mom's fingernails in my shoulders as I drove our 31', topheavy motorhome up the switchback road. Great scenery, though!
